I really have a love/hate relationship with killboards. I like them in that I can look back over time and see what I have done and be able to show other people, "Hey, look, I'm not completely terrible, can I fly with you? I'm the best cyno kestrel killer in all of Eve!"
But at the same time, for that very reason, I am more risk averse. I would love to take my ship, jump into that gang of 3, and see what happens if only for the laughs... But if I want to stand a chance of joining another piracy corp in the future, I can't do that. They would see, "Wow, this person is a complete idiot, look, he thought he could take on 3 Domis with his Incursus! What a n00b!"
I could have my own killboard and only post mails where I'm being "supr srs pvp" and not post the ones where I'm just goofing off, but then who is to say I'm simply not posting a lot of my losses? Again, missing mails on one's killboard is a good way to get told off from any prospective corps.
Killboards also encourage mail whoring. I was in a corporation for well over a year that is known to grab a target and hold it while friends move several jumps just to get on the mail.
Side note: One of many reasons I have been flying completely solo lately; I want to show that I actually can get in a fight by myself and sometimes even win.
If there was a way to show one's PvP competence, encourage taking risks, and not reward lame behavior, I'd be all for it. Killboards don't do that, unfortunately...
The benefit I can see for an official CCP Killboard is that it would be more difficult to hide your embarrassing losses, it might update more frequently, and the pricing information could be more accurate. Current killboards have atrocious pricing data, especially when it comes to faction gear.
The killboards out there right now have some cool features such as point systems, intel gathering, player PvP classifications, rankings, etc. that CCP would probably never implement.
Even if there was an official CCP board, the other boards would be better tools overall. If CCP releases a board with cool new feature X, then all the other boards will implement X in about a week in addition to their existing functionality.
It would be kind of cool for every corp to have a public, in-game killboard. Better than that generic list we have now. Make the public status optional for those who have shame. But really, that's about it.
